Brenda Lee Reed, a mother of five, nutrition expert, and founder of Genesis Healing Center, says that children consume an alarming amount of beverages that parents mistakenly believe are healthy.
Parents want their children to thrive in health and happiness, says Brenda Lee Reed. This is one reason that, at any given time, playgrounds across the country are filled with active little bodies and smiling faces. These children, says Brenda Lee Reed, are almost certainly not far from a parent-approved beverage. After all, no one wants their child to overheat or dehydrate. Brenda Lee Reed points out that the majority of these drinks are fruit juice.
Fruit juice is healthy, right? Not really, says Brenda Lee Reed. Commercially packaged boxed juice drinks contain an overwhelming amount of added sugar. All this supplementary sweetness might make it more appealing but it also makes it little more than empty calories; these juices are not a replacement for fruit, points out Brenda Lee Reed. Sadly, the advertising campaigns for children’s products have painted an image of purity on readily available fruit juice, and it’s hard to shake.
Fruit contains naturally occurring sugar, notes Brenda Lee Reed. This gives fruit like strawberries and bananas their mild sweetness and taste appeal that kids love. Bottled fruit juice contains these same sugars but additional fructose or sucrose that makes them more desirable to the 10 and under crowd. All that added sugar in juices, especially in the form of high-fructose corn syrup, increases the risks of visceral fat, a weakened sensitivity to insulin, and even higher than normal levels of LDL – the bad cholesterol.
Orange Juice Causes Arthritis?
It seems an unlikely side effect of having a nip of nectar but studies have shown that women who consume fructose-enhanced beverages like orange juice and soda are up to 250% more likely to suffer from gout. Brenda Lee Reed explains that gout is an extremely painful form of arthritis which can be difficult to control. Juice isn’t the only culprit here, however; colas seem to have the same effect on the joints with long-term consumption.
